People are dying on South Carolina highways. How long will we wait to act?

South Carolina faces a deadly DUI crisis. We rank #1 in the nation for alcohol-impaired-driving fatality rate based on miles driven. Our legislators have a responsibility to put public safety above politics.

S.052 has reached a critical point. The bill remains unfinished, and if it dies, South Carolina could face another legislative cycle beginning in January 2027—with another bill number, more hearings, more debates and more delays. We cannot afford to start over.

This is not about Republicans or Democrats. It is about saving lives. Families who have already lost loved ones cannot afford another year of waiting. Those traveling our roads tonight deserve better.

I am calling on the Conference Negotiations Committee to reconvene. I am calling on our House and Senate leaders to put differences aside and find a way forward. And I am calling on Governor McMaster to help make this happen.

Governor McMaster, you have an opportunity to leave South Carolina with a legacy that will outlive your time in office—not simply as a governor who served, but as a governor who helped save lives. Make S.052 part of that legacy. Sign a life-saving bill into law and let South Carolina remember that, when the moment came, you chose to act.
